The second EP from Japanese shoegaze/alternative rock band Sanzameku.

Formed on March 26, 2023, the Osaka-based band features pen (guitar/vocals), Akane (guitar), Shima (bass), and Nagisa Kanzaki (drums) on this release. Across six tracks, “Tabiji” expands the range of Sanzameku’s expression, with a stronger emphasis on the contrast between fragile silence and overwhelming walls of sound. The band’s growing sense of scale is matched by lyrics that carefully capture subtle emotional shifts, shaping a distinct world unique to Sanzameku.

#1 “Kairi”

The EP opens with psychedelic guitar noise that hits like an electric current running through the brain. pen’s impassioned cries and delicate whispers intertwine, pulling the listener into a world where ecstasy and destruction exist side by side.

#2 “Seiran”

The contrast between delicate passages and crushing walls of sound reveals the depth of inner emotions. The repeated phrase “itai” (“it hurts”) leaves a raw emotional imprint, highlighting Akane’s songwriting ability.

#3 “Inori”

A slow-burning track with a post-rock-inspired sense of scale. The vocals gradually gain intensity, carrying a deep sense of longing before leaving behind an afterglow reminiscent of a prayer offered toward the sky.

#4 “Yumeji”

A dreamlike instrumental that blurs the boundary between reality and illusion. While offering a brief moment of tranquility, the distant sound of a railroad crossing bell introduces an unsettling sense of ambiguity.

#5 “Houro”

A song that has been performed live since 2024, finally receiving its official release. The emotionally charged vocals convey a deep sense of struggle, building toward a cathartic finale of towering noise.

#6 “Suisou (feat. Junki Yamamoto (Yotsudome Noddy) & Seira (Yotsudome Noddy))”

A collaboration featuring Yotsudome Noddy guitarist Junki Yamamoto and vocalist Seira. Within a mysterious soundscape that feels as if it is drifting underwater, the twin vocals of pen and Seira blend together with striking beauty. The release event also featured this lineup on stage, delivering a passionate exchange of voices that expanded beyond the recorded version.

“Tabiji” represents Sanzameku’s artistic identity at its fullest: lyrics that delicately capture inner emotions, vocals that vividly trace emotional fluctuations, and dynamic arrangements that move effortlessly between silence and overwhelming noise. It is a compelling release that showcases a unique presence within Japan’s shoegaze scene.

The band’s intense individuality may not appeal to every listener, but for those who connect with its deeply personal atmosphere, “Tabiji” offers a powerful and immersive experience.

Following the release, guitarist Akane and bassist Shima departed from the band, and Sanzameku is currently on a hiatus from live performances. However, preparations for a return are reportedly underway behind the scenes. Fans will be watching closely as Sanzameku prepares to embark on its next journey.
