Softcult share live performance on KEXP—Japan tour set for June

Softcult have released a live performance recorded at KEXP.

Formed in 2020 in Ontario, Canada, the duo consists of twin sisters Mercedes Arn-Horn (vocals/guitar) and Phoenix Arn-Horn (vocals/drums/production). Their sound—self-described as “riotgaze”—channels the spirit of ’90s Riot Grrrl through shadowed melodies and a punk-driven immediacy, earning them international attention.

The session centers on material from their debut full-length “When A Flower Doesn’t Grow,” unfolding as a performance where ethereal melodies collide with crushing walls of sound. The closing track “Tired” stands out in particular, culminating in a cathartic release as the repeated cry of “I’m tired!” cuts through the distortion.

An interview segment is also included toward the end, touching on the message behind their music, the thematic core of the album, and the importance of maintaining a DIY ethos.

With a Japan tour scheduled for June, this session serves as a compelling preview for those awaiting their live performances.
