Fourth album from Japanese dark post-rock/doomgaze band Presence of Soul.
Formed in 2001 by Yuki (Gt/Vo/Key), the band welcomed guitarist Yoshi (member of Tokyo Shogazer) in 2005 and has been active with a lineup of supporting members since.
The word “darkness” seems made for this band. Their music is devastatingly slow, crushingly heavy, and overwhelmingly bleak—funeral doom would pale in comparison. This album is the ultimate expression of apocalyptic darkness.
A personal highlight is “Antinomy” featuring demonic growls by Ryo of Japan’s funeral doom legends Funeral Moth, it opens with an overwhelming wall of sound that crawls through hell itself. Moments of serene relief arrive with Yuki’s pure singing, only to be shattered again by horrifying screams that scorch the world in black flames. Experiencing this track live is simply transcendent.
“Probability of Destruction and Hope” featuring guest vocals from Rosetta’s singer, offers a more desolate, prog-influenced listening experience—prog fans should take note.
