Gísli Gunnarsson Drops MV for “Andlitin í Berginu”—A Heartfelt Tribute to the Lost Spirits

Icelandic multi-instrumentalist Gísli Gunnarsson has unveiled the music video for “Andlitin í Berginu”, the second single from his forthcoming album “Úr Öskunni.”

Gunnarsson is known for a grand, immersive sound that draws on classical foundations while incorporating elements of post-rock, shoegaze, and black metal. His previous album “Mementos” (2023) featured contributions from members of Sigur Rós and Kælan Mikla, while the 2024 single “Wings of Glass” saw him collaborate with Neige of Alcest. Beyond his own releases, Gunnarsson has also contributed arrangements and additional vocals to Alcest’s “Les Chants de l’aurore,” further underscoring a versatility that continues to resonate with listeners across genre boundaries.

“Andlitin í Berginu” unfolds as a solemn tribute, opening with delicate clean guitar tones before gradually expanding into an expansive arrangement where graceful vocals intertwine with swelling walls of distortion, ultimately reaching a cathartic climax.

Regarding the song’s background, Gunnarsson notes:

“Like a lot of Icelanders, I’ve always loved spotting trolls in the lava fields, seeing shapes in the rocks that feel like old spirits watching over the land. There were two on Þorbjörn, near Grindavík, that I was really attached to. I called them the king and the servant. They felt like guardians in a way. But during the earthquakes, they came down the mountain. It honestly felt like I’d lost something sacred. So I wrote Andlitin í Berginu from their perspective, like their final thoughts, their voices echoing through the rock.”

The new album “Úr Öskunni” will be released on November 7, 2025. Drawing on expansive, atmospheric textures, the record may resonate with listeners familiar with artists such as Sigur Rós and Alcest.
