Rising Heavy Shoegaze Band from Tokyo, Asylum, Releases 2nd EP “ihatov/LAND”
Asylum, a Tokyo-based shoegaze band, have released their second EP, “ihatov/LAND.”
They position themselves under the banner of “shoegaze hardcore,” defined by a dense and aggressive sound driven by a triple-guitar setup. Their wall of noise resonates not only with shoegaze listeners but also with fans of louder genres such as hardcore, metal, and grunge.
Track #1, “ihatov,” has already drawn significant attention as a live staple and is now officially released in recorded form. Sharply cut guitar riffs that recall recent strands of grungegaze are paired with Japanese lyrics imbued with a sense of melancholy, adding emotional depth to the track. The closing breakdown unfolds with a boldness that appears to push beyond the established framework of Japanese shoegaze, hinting at the band’s broader ambitions.
Track #2, “LAND,” explores a darker, more atmospheric direction. Within its contrasts between restraint and eruption, themes of loss are rendered with quiet poignancy. Sudden bursts of shouted vocals emerge between heavy riffs, while the finale is overtaken by storm-like waves of noise that leave a lingering afterimage.
As releases from overseas acts such as Fleshwater, Soul Blind, Superheaven, and Bleed continue to fuel global interest in heavy shoegaze, Asylum appear to offer a response from Japan—one shaped by a distinct and self-contained vision.
